Taking Heart is a long-running program coordinated by MCC and the Muslim American Society of Minnesota (MAS-MN) to bring Christians and members of other faith communities together with Muslims for food and conversation during Ramadan.
Ramadan is a holy month of the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset. Fasting during Ramadan, which falls during the summer season, is one of the “five pillars” of Islam and is performed to learn compassion, self-restraint, and generosity. A meal called an Iftar breaks the fast each day. In 2020 Ramadan falls between sundown April 23 and May 23.
This year we are offering virtual opportunities to learn about Ramadan. We hope these Zoom webinars will encourage people of all faiths or none to log in and join us to hear the essentials of every Taking Heart event: Opening remarks and welcome with a recitation of the Quran and the call to prayer; a presentation on Islam and Ramadan and its customs; breakout groups where a number of topics can be discussed.
In order for you to receive a link to this Zoom event you need to register.

The Taking Heart Open Houses program has been bringing Muslims and non-Muslims together for food and conversation for 15 years. In 2019 over 1400 community members participated in Taking Heart during Ramadan, the month on the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunup to sundown. In 2020 Ramadan falls between April 24 and May 24.
This year, because of the lockdown, we cannot offer the same kind of Open Houses known widely in the community. Instead, we are offering virtual opportunities to learn about Ramadan with the leadership of:
